James Sparks

October 21, 1948 — May 31, 2026

Monee, IL

James S. Sparks, 77, of Monee, Illinois, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2026.

Born on October 21, 1948, in Crossett, Arkansas, Jim was the son of the late Dewey and Faye Sparks. He lived a life marked by faith, hard work, devotion to family, and a deep love for the Lord. He proudly served his country as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army during the Vietnam War era.

Jim shared 56 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Sharon Sparks. More than husband and wife, they were best friends, business partners of Park Pet Shop (1972-2023), and constant companions who truly did everything together. Their marriage was a beautiful example of commitment, love, and friendship.

He was a devoted father to his son, Jim Sparks (Cheryl) of New Lenox, Illinois, and his daughter, Wendy Barton (Todd) of Miami, Florida. He was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren: James A. Sparks, Luke Sparks, Kaleen McHann, Janel Lewis, and Garrett Barton. He was also blessed with two cherished great-grandchildren, Billie McHann and Callahan Lewis.

Jim is also survived by his three siblings, Charlene Sparks of Apache Junction, Arizona; John (Kathy) Sparks of Park Forest, Illinois; and Vicky Weis of Palos Heights, Illinois. To them, he was affectionately known by the nickname “Shelly,” a name that reflected the special bond they shared throughout their lives. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Opyt of Beecher, Illinois. Their lifelong relationship was a treasured blessing.

Jim was a born-again Christian whose faith was the foundation of his life. He loved the Lord with all his heart and would want everyone reading this to know the hope and salvation found through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He faithfully served his church for many years as a Sunday School teacher and deacon, investing his time and heart into teaching God’s Word and serving others. His greatest desire was that others would come to know Christ as their Savior and experience the peace and eternal life that faith provides.

Though he will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him, his family rejoices in the assurance that he is now in the presence of his Savior, hearing the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, June 5, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at Heritage Baptist Church at 21739 South Lagrange Road in Frankfort, Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those wishing to honor Jim’s memory share the message of God’s love with others and live each day with the kindness that he exemplified throughout his life.
