Susan J. Oterson

January 12, 1944 — February 28, 2026

Orland Park, IL

Susan Oterson, beloved mother, sister, and cherished friend to many, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026, at the age of 82. She lived a life defined by love, quiet strength, and an unwavering devotion to her family.

Born in Yonkers, NY to Francis and Agnes (Sleight) Oterson, Susan lived for many years on Long Island before moving to Orland Park, Illinois in 2019. She grew up in Greenlawn, New York, where she graduated from Harborfields High School. Her passion for languages led her to further her education at the Latin American Institute in Manhattan, New York. Her studies there reflected her dedication to learning and her appreciation for cultural diversity.

Susan loved many genres of music, but oldies in particular, and she was passionate about animals, keeping a wonderful assortment of pets, including dogs, cats, and a variety of birds.

Susan was a woman of great heart and empathy. Those who knew her remember her warmth, intelligence, gentle spirit, and her steadfast presence through life’s joys and sorrows alike. She faced each chapter of her life with grace, and her love for her children was the defining thread of her years.

She is survived by her son, James Groccia, and her brother, Richard Otterson, who carry her memory forward with deep love and gratitude. She was preceded in death by her beloved children, Gina Groccia and Robert Groccia, Jr., whose loss she carried with a mother’s enduring tenderness.

Susan’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in peace, reunited with those she loved and lost before her.
